Large antique French seltzogene, a home soda maker, marked Veritable Seltzogene D. Fevre, Paris, with Marque Deposee and the maker’s signature on the pewter head. Late 19th to early 20th century, around 1880 to 1920. Two stacked glass globes covered in the original wire mesh, with the pewter head and spout.

Seltzogenes like this were fancy home soda makers. Water went in the bottom globe and seltzer powders in the top, and when the two met they made the fizz, which was squirted out through the spout. The design goes back to a model registered by Fevre in Paris in 1859, and these were used in homes and Paris bars.

Stands 50 cm high. The bottom globe is 23 cm across and the top globe is 16 cm. Extremely thick, heavy glass, 9.25 kg. The glass is aged clear glass that has clouded slightly with age. The inner glass tube is intact and there are no cracks.

One small break in the wire mesh on the lower globe, where a short length has come loose, as shown in the photos. The glass beneath is undamaged. Age wear and rust to the wire, as expected.
