A magnificent and highly unusual survivor on the Australian market, this museum-grade, early 19th-century primitive foot warmer dates from the 1800-1850 era. Items of this vintage designed for extreme winter transit are incredibly scarce in Australia, making this a standout piece for local collectors of early folk art, hearthware, or primitive domestic antiques.
Showing superb historical authenticity, the outer casing features thick, rustic hand-hewn timber panels secured with genuine blacksmith-forged, hand-hammered iron nails. The wood boasts an untouched, deeply oxidized natural patina with beautiful edge wear. Fascinating remnants of the original leather carry strap remain pinned to the sides.
The dense, heavy soapstone core is intact and retains its original hand-formed iron wire pull-cradle, which allowed the hot stone to be safely slid into the protective ventilation box. This is a complete, untouched specimen of early nineteenth-century household survival technology, rarely seen imported or offered locally.
