This is a genuine, highly collectable New South Wales Fire Brigades (NSWFB) brass fireman's helmet. This operational piece features the iconic Merryweather-pattern design, hand-assembled by the renowned Sydney manufacturer Rider & Bell during the mid-20th century.
This helmet stands out due to its high degree of original completeness, featuring the rare and sought-after brass-scale chinstrap on its original leather backing, secured by ornate side rosette bosses. The high top comb displays the traditional embossed dragon/sea-serpent motif designed to deflect falling debris.
The interior leather sweatband retains a vintage handwritten firefighter name inscription in ink, offering an excellent opportunity for future archival or genealogical research by the buyer.
Condition Report:
  • Exterior: Honest antique condition with a beautiful, uncleaned natural patina and minor traces of authentic verdigris. Consistent with operational service, there are a few age- and use-related dings to the top comb and one missing securing screw as shown in the photographs. The brass shell remains structurally sound.
  • Interior: Features internal square brass washer plates and solder marks characteristic of authentic local mid-century manufacturing. The multi-tongued leather crown suspension liner remains present but shows significant age-related wear, dry rot, and separation (as pictured). Handled with care.
